Start and Finish: Entrance to Midlothian Ski Centre. The number 4 Lothian Bus comes out here. The Steading is an excellent pub to round off your trip, or you can carry on back over the bypass to Craigdon Mountain Sports, which has an upstairs cafe with views of the route you’ll have just completed.

Description: A longer hillwalk with superb views of both the steep northern flank of the Pentlands on the way out and, visibility permitting, views across Edinburgh and the Forth towards the Highlands. Along the way there will be opportunities to discuss geology, geomorphology and archaeology at various sites.

Duration: 3-4 hours

Cost: £20 per person
