Upland, hill and moorland walks

Geological trips

I have a few standing trips that I can put on at short notice. Contact me through the Enquiry Form.

Dob’s Linn and Grey Mare’s Tail: A mixture of glacial landforms and a quite difficult walk to visit a key locality that is the global section for defining the Ordovician/Silurian Boundary.

Pentlands Rock! based on either a circular or linear walk on paths in the heart of the Pentlands using a leaflet as the guide.

Baddinsgill Reservoir and the Lyne Water: Visit one of the less well-known Ordovician inlier sections in the heart of the Pentlands.

Hill Walking

As I am based in Edinburgh, covering day trips (or late evening bivvy with early morning walk-out) within a 100 mile radius is generally possible. This can take me as far north as Angus Glens, Glen Shee or Blair Atholl and to the South into Dumfries and Galloway or deep into the Scottish Borders.

I operate within the remit of my HML and Moorland Leader qualification, which means I have some limitations while working on my own but can call upon colleagues who are Mountain Leader (Summer) award holders to cover anywhere in Scotland that does not require rock-climbing.

For multi-day trips, I am willing to consider going further afield but only if I am providing something that local mountain leaders or instructors are not able to do for you. This is most likely to be a geological or natural history trip, a NNAS course, or ‘boots on the ground’ low-level long distance walks such as the West Highland Way.

The Mountain Training Association runs a Find a Leader service by region and activity. Using a leader with current and appropriate MTA qualification for your activity means you are hiring a mountain professional with a good knowledge of current best practice. The Cairngorms, NW Highlands and Lochaber, the Lakes and Snowdon are full of people with tremendous experience and local knowledge whom I will refer you on to if you would prefer a personal recommendation.
